Billion Rising
On Monday, 17th February, Brescia House School once again gathered together in support of the International Once Billion Rising Campaign. This is the 8th consecutive year the school has participated in this event. The symbol chosen this year was the symbol of peace. ‘It reminds us that no matter what race, creed, gender, religion, language or age we are, if we treat everyone in our path with kindness, dignity, non-judgement and respect we are helping to create a more peaceful world. We need to sow what we desire to reap, ‘ Liz Norman, Head of Counselling and Community Outreach at Brescia House School.
In the weeks leading up to the event, staff and girls had discussions about why we all need to join together in solidarity and peace and ask for an end to all atrocities and abuses of/against women and girls; to help bring about a better life for women and children across the world. Discussions centred around children’s rights and responsibilities, keeping safe, speaking out when people are hurt, learning to stand up against bullies, learning about child abductions and child labour.
Whilst gathered together, the girls and staff sang the song ‘We are the young’. The words remind us of the importance of our children and how the future depends on how they have been raised. By teaching peace, kindness and tolerance, and by being an example of these values, we all contribute to a better tomorrow.
Teach us well, teach us how to care, give us love, love that we can share
And we’ll walk hand in hand in the light of the rising sun
We are the young, we are the young, we are the young!
