Shavathon and Ribbonathon 2021

On Friday, 19th March, Brescia House School once again ran their annual CANSA Shavathon and CHOC Ribbonathon events.

These are two completely different well-regarded NPO’s offering very valuable services to members of the wider community in terms of support, care and counselling to individuals suffering from cancer, as well as support to their families.

CHOC focuses predominantly on children with cancer, CANSA focuses on effectively anyone with cancer. Pupils and staff were encouraged to contribute to the event by way of donations and showing their support by purchasing brightly coloured ribbons to wear in their hair.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the CANSA ‘warriors’ and their respective ‘hairdressers’ were gathered in the hall where the event was recorded and then live-streamed to all the classrooms across the school so that all the pupils, from Grade R to Grade 12, could watch the event unfold. Parents could watch it at home online too. DJ FLAX from YFM was not only the MC for the event, but also agreed to have his hair shaved. Pupils Caitlin Felton, Esha Parbhoo, Amalia Sequeira, Jemmah Killian, Ellen Jupp, Alexandra Tserkezis, Mackenzie Benade, Sohara Naidoo and Meegin van Wyk all agreed to have their hair either shaved or cut and donated to CANSA. Further fun followed during break when Mrs Conlan (Grade R teacher), Mrs Borello (Head of the High School) and Mrs Owgan (Head of the Primary School) had their hair sprayed in all colours. An additional little “extra” to the event was the wearing of Crazy Socks in support of Down Syndrome Awareness Day *21st March).
