South African Society for History Teaching
On the 1st and 2nd of October, our History department attended a conference entitled Teaching controversial and emotive topics in a diverse society held by the South African Society for History Teaching. Staff from Brescia House delivered two presentations on projects we had undertaken in past year.
Kevin Smart and Graham West presented on the Grade 7 & 8 integrated project completed in August which focused on the theme of connecting with untold stories. This presentation explained how the school created a week long, interdisciplinary project to help pupils understand that there are many untold stories which historical narratives often exclude.
Laura van Houten and Graham West presented on the Education Beyond Borders programme that we have started which connects our pupils with their peers in schools across the world. The programme encourages pupils to engage with alternative perspectives and viewpoints, as well as preparing them for the future of the working world. In this presentation, Laura van Houten focused on a Grade 11 collaboration project undertaken with the Ursuline School in New Rochelle, New York. In this project, pupils had to research and compare inequality in their respective cities.
